Workshop Concept:


This workshop immerses attendees in the unique sonic qualities of music formats—cassette, vinyl, CD, and streaming.

Participants will experience how different mediums influence the listening experience, fostering a deeper appreciation for sound as an art form.






Workshop Objectives:

1. Explore the history and evolution of music formats.

2. Compare sound quality, warmth, and depth across mediums.

Structure:




1. Introduction (15 Minutes)

• Brief history of music formats and their cultural significance.

• Discuss how technological shifts impact the way we consume music.

• Highlight how formats reflect personal and collective identities.




2. Listening Sessions (45 Minutes)




Participants rotate between listening stations, each showcasing the same track in different formats:




Station 1: Vinyl

• Discuss the warmth, dynamic range, and ritualistic aspect of playing records.




Station 2: Cassette

• Highlight the lo-fi aesthetic, nostalgia, and portability.




Station 3: CD

• Explore the clarity, consistency, and precision of digital discs.




Station 4: Streaming

• Contrast convenience, compression, and accessibility with older formats.




3. Group Discussion (30 Minutes)

• Reflect on how each format felt sonically and emotionally.

• Share personal memories tied to specific formats.

• Discuss the resurgence of vinyl and cassettes in today’s culture.




4. Hands-On Activity: Vinyl & Cassette Exploration (30 Minutes)

•Vinyl: Attendees create a custom record sleeve design.

•Cassette: Create mixtape covers or explore recording their voices/music onto cassettes.




5. Closing (15 Minutes)

• Wrap up with a discussion on the future of music formats.

•Provide takeaways: a curated playlist featuring tracks optimized for different formats or a small booklet summarizing the workshop.
